Hi everyone! It’s Mindful Monday and today I want to talk about how we can
be mindful of our phones when it comes to social media.
I read an article recently and it really opened my eyes to exactly what we are doing each time we pull out our phones in the presence of others. The author described it as if we are stepping into a portal and leaving others behind. We have completely accepted that it is ok for someone to slip in and out of conversation with us as they jump into the portal that is their phone.
How many times have you been talking to someone only to see them look away from you to interact with their phone? We rarely call them out on it as it is just “normal”.
But what I want to know is should it be?
Time block social media.
Most of us have heard of the term time blocking. It is an extremely efficient way to get a lot done throughout the day. What if we started doing that with social media? But rather then looking at time blocking as restrictive and stating all the times you can’t or shouldn’t use your phone, frame it as what are the best times you SHOULD use social media.
I would argue that the best times to interact with social media are when you aren’t in the presence of others. Turn off your notifications. Use social media strategically and with purpose. You might find that by doing this, you are using it less and now you are free to be fully present with the people you care about throughout the day.
Choose one day a week to fast from social media.
What if we all choose one day a week to not check social media? Free yourself from the pressure to respond instantaneously to every tweet, comment and notification. Choose one day to be fully present. I promise you that everything will still be there waiting for you tomorrow! 😛
