We recently had our children dedicated at our church and we wrote each of them a letter that we read aloud on the day of the event. (Here is Ellie’s) It was a daunting task as neither of us really consider ourselves to be eloquent writers. But it ended up being a wonderful time of reflection as we remembered those sweet moments before they were born and dreamed of who we hope they become.

Our carefree, joyful, charismatic baby boy. Before your father and I were together, God revealed to me that I would have a son named Samuel. Your name means heard by God. We always knew we wanted you, but little did we know that your arrival would strengthen and solidify our family and make us complete. You have been an answer to prayer in redeeming both of us in more ways then you will ever know. Since the day of your birth, you have brought a sense of peace into all of our lives.
We are constantly being reminded that you are not a mini version of either of us. God has placed your soul into this world with unique purpose and it is our honor to help guide you into the man He has already called you to be.
Our greatest desire for you is to continue the mission of becoming a better Hess man then the ones before you. You are a warrior, so stand tall and fight every lie, insecurity and hardship that will come at you throughout your life. Know that you will have all the resources and guidance along your journey. You have been empowered by God and those He places in your life to accomplish this very task.
You are the son of a King, and as such, you were placed on this earth and deemed worthy of being a man that bears His image. No matter how you may feel or what anyone may say, you have what it takes, and you are good enough in both God’s eyes and in ours.
Like Solomon, seek after wisdom and place yourself around good counsel in order to become stronger and accomplish great things.
May you be fearless in life and take on any obstacle with strength and confidence. Don’t be afraid to ask the hard questions to find the well needed answers.
Be an advocate for Christ’s redemptive love and salvation, protect those who need protection and show compassion to everyone around you.
Sam your smile is infectious and you have brought such a calming presence into our home. Everyday when we look at you, we are so thankful that God chose you to be in our lives now. Know that we will always see you as a great man in the making and you do have what it takes in whatever God has for you.
We love you,
Mommy and Daddy
