Today is day three of my curriculum shares and I’ll be sharing my fourth grader’s curricula! (If you missed the previous posts about my Kindergarten choices or my 3rd grade choices, you can find them here and here.)

With my daughter being my oldest child, this will be my first year diving into teaching fourth grade. As I stated in my previous post, my daughter will attend her university hybrid homeschool program 2x a week along with her brother. She loves being at home but attending classes has pushed her out of her comfort zone in the best way and she has been thriving with this hybrid model of learning! We make a lot of sacrifices to be able to afford this but I am thankful we can provide this for our kids. They cover every subject on the days they meet (Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Music and even PE). She would tell you her favorite things are science and music! They perform a musical variety show after every semester and she loves it.

4th Grade

Morning Work

Like my other two children, my fourth grader also will have work to complete while she eats breakfast each morning. All of this is done independently and she usually can complete all of this with no help from me. She will complete morning work Monday-Friday (even on the mornings they attend their hybrid school). Their school starts late at 9am and their morning work takes less than 30 minutes.

This will be my daughters fifth year completing this curriculum. As I stated in the past post, it is one of those things that some might consider “busy work” but I have found it very helpful in seeing where the learning gaps are. There are 180 lessons and she will do this 5x per week. The format is consistent and the topics spiral. Each day there are a variety of things that should be review and it is quick and engaging.

This is the first year she will be trying this reading comprehension curriculum since her previous one stops in third grade. I found this by One Stop Teacher Shop in Teachers Pay Teachers. I was looking for something that had a short daily prompt as well as a mix of fiction and non-fiction reading. For this comprehension curriculum, she will read a one page passage and complete a few questions 4x a week. Then on Friday she will take a quiz to see if she has retained her learning. There will be fluency practice, summarizing and making inferences to name a few of the skills covered.

This will be her second year using this cursive curriculum from The Good and The Beautiful. I purchased level 4. Her penmanship is lovely and I credit it to the daily practice over the past 4 years. She will do this on the days she doesn’t go to her hybrid school. She enjoys the rainbow dot system where each stroke of the pencil follows the rainbow order (ROYGBIV). 

All of my children complete Explode the Code from beginning to end. There are 8 books and she will be finishing the series this year. Even though the work is simple, it has given her strong phonemic awareness. 

Math

Horizons Level 4

This will be the second year my daughter will be using this math curriculum and if it wasn’t the curriculum used in her hybrid school we probably wouldn’t use it for her. There are a lot of problems and this can be overwhelming for her at times. Her teacher last year suggested that as long as she understood the concepts that she didn’t need to complete 100% of the problems. I will most likely continue with that this year. She scored far about her 3rd grade level in her end of year testing this summer so I am confident that she is doing fine! It is a mix between mastery and spiral where the topics are repeated throughout.

Language Arts

The Good and the Beautiful

Essentials in Writing

For my daughter, I will be using the The Good and the Beautiful Level 4 LIGHT. Meaning she will read the stories and I will look through the lesson each day to see what topics I want her to cover and what she will skip at home. She will be doing multiple novel studies through her school as well as Essentials in Writing Level 4 so she won’t have the time for a full separate language arts curriculum. But she enjoys the stories and will try their new online spelling program this year.

Reading

My daughter devours books and reads every day willingly. She always in the middle of more then one book at any given time! This year she will be reading 5 novels with her class and completing various activities there. In addition to those, I will have a book for her to read each month and when she is finished, she will fill in one of these book report sheets from Teachers Pay Teachers. I chose books that follow her current interests along with ones I knew she would enjoy!

Science/History

Science and history will be covered through the program my kids attend twice a week. I am very thankful for a place that is able to dive into these subjects more fully in a way I don’t have the capacity to do in this season. A few big projects she will participate in are their yearly science fair and a North Carolina state study.  

Typing

This will be our first time trying a typing program and she is very excited to use The Good and the Beautiful typing program. Each level covers a different continent and I like that the program is enclosed within the website so there won’t be an unnecessary ads or popups like in some other typing
programs.

Wow, what a full year for 4th grade! Not all of these subjects will be covered everyday and she will enjoy her in-person school days filled with learning as well.
